About Paul

Paul Brownell is the Chief Technology Officer at Growth Acceleration Partners (GAP), where he has led technology strategy, research and development, and service delivery since 2009. With a career grounded in both product management and engineering leadership, Paul brings a track record of turning technology investments into measurable business results across software, data, and AI.

Earlier in his career, Paul spent 14 years at BMC Software, where he served as Director of Product Line and oversaw software engineering teams across six countries. When a corporate acquisition unexpectedly landed in his lap, international teams in England and Israel — followed by a new team in India — he developed a hands-on understanding of how to build and scale distributed global engineering teams. That experience shaped how he thinks about delivery models to this day. At GAP, he has applied those lessons to lead and grow nearshore teams across the Americas, helping clients achieve technical excellence without sacrificing agility.

Paul writes and speaks on topics including AI strategy, data foundations for AI, Agile transformation, global engineering teams, and cloud modernization. He is a vocal advocate for hypothesis-driven AI adoption: defining a business value proposition before committing to AI investment, rather than building in search of a use case. He has been a guest on the Don't Panic, It's Just Data podcast and the Digital Transformation Talk panel series, and is quoted regularly in GAP content on CTO strategy and engineering leadership.

An Agile SAFe evangelist, Paul holds a BS from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. When he is not thinking about distributed systems or data architecture, he can be found motorcycling or building high-performance PCs.
