Challenge:
Two parallel modernizations, a tank-monitoring system (VB6 to Blazor) and a field-service mobile app (Swift iOS to Kotlin Multiplatform), required significant estimation and execution effort across spike investigations, architecture planning, and multi-phase rewrites.
Solution:
Engineer-driven rapid modernization using Claude Code with Claude Opus as an embedded delivery partner inside the IDE. Claude Opus handled planning sessions, spike estimation, architectural guidance, and multi-session code review, maintaining context across sessions to ensure architectural coherence. The platform's function calling enabled direct interaction with the IDE, allowing Claude to execute, test, and iterate on code without context switching.
Impact:
The mobile platform's initial migration spike completed in 8 hours instead of the estimated 30, a 73% reduction. This early win compressed the total rolling estimate from 332 hours to approximately 170 hours. Separately, an Excel-import proof of concept shipped in about 30 minutes, demonstrating the velocity gains from Claude's agentic capabilities.
